“Daddy, why is the plane on the wall pink?”
Well son, it's kind of a funny story. You see, your mother sometimes has control issues when it comes to certain things. Mainly in the kitchen and interior design stuff. What’s that? Oh interior design is when you match stuff in the house. Like if you have a brown rug, you want brown curtains, something like that. Anyway, I found this wooden plane when she was pregnant with you and I was very excited about painting it myself, sort of my own little daddy project. I started to plan what colors I wanted to paint it, but then I made the mistake of taking your mother to Lowes with me.
"But why is it pink?"
Well son, I was going to paint your plane blue, but your mother didn’t think blue was right for the color scheme in your room. What buddy? Oh, a color scheme is when you match stuff in a room. Yes, sort of like interior design...I think…but more…uhh…I uh…I don't really know son.
Anyway, to please your mother I decide to paint your plane red. Yes, like the fire trucks that our dog Mason howls at as they go by. Well your mother didn’t think that particular shade of red went with your criminally expensive curtains, or your outrageously priced quilt. Outrageous? Yes, like that bad call during the football game yesterday. What? Oh no, don’t say that second part!

Yes, like that bad call during the football game yesterday. What? Oh no, don’t say that second part!
So your mother gets involved with my project for you and pulls 5 shades of red that she thinks will work for the plane. Why did we need to get paint shades for a wooden plane? Son, you will learn that your mother can be quite….well…..it goes back to that control thing. So she has all of these shades of red and I tried to act like I was really thinking over my decision. You’ll get the hang of that one here soon, it makes her happy if we put an effort and appear like we care about these things that we find insanely boring. Boring? You know, like golf.
So I painted your plane with the correct shade of red that your mother chose yet made it appear that I chose and that is why you have a pink plane on your wall. Think of it as a special plane; it can fly through the air yet still be fashionable. It's one of a kind and it was painted especially for you.
"But Dad, I want a blue plane."

I'm sorry son, you’re going to have to go ask your mother for that.

Oh Pete, this sounds like the reverse with the girls original bedroom and Kevin wanting to put blue on the walls when I was having a girl. Well, as you know three years later it is now pink. Don't worry if your son doesn't like the color, he will tell you in his own time!!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, Janine it does...and I'm sure you're right about that!
DeleteHehehe. I have to laugh at your post and also Janine's comment cuz I remember reading about that, too. Well, this is too cute and now it'll be a story forever etched in wooden-airplane history. HEHEHE.
ReplyDeleteThanks Cyndi, but I'm sure his mother will make sure I get the facts staight!
DeleteOkay, I laughed out loud at the "outrageous" line! 2 out of 3 of my boys have wooden planes hanging from their ceilings. The good news is they came pre-painted. The bad news is I drove my husband and father (he's the handy one who actually had to hang it) crazy as to WHERE in the room the plane should hang from. We had a long involved discussion about this too...I love how you project into the future with your post -- so cute!
ReplyDeleteThanks Oh boy, I think I will try to fit those curtains in to every post...haha!
DeleteHahaha! Oh, Pete, you crack me up! If your wife is anything like my control-freak mom (God love her), she'll be redecorating that room before he's old enough to ask about the plane. :) It's very sweet that you wanted to paint it for him. Great post!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cari, and yes, I'm sure it will be repainted soon!
DeleteTell Anne the color is perfect . . . tho it looks like it's a little crooked on the wall . . . just saying. . . . probably a control thing . . . :)
ReplyDeleteIt did come out a lot darker Laurie, and I'm sure Anne will have me break out the level now!
ReplyDeletePete.... thanks for the chuckle this morning~~ It turns out the color is perfect!!! See? Momma is ALWAYS right!!
ReplyDeleteHmm... my name was supposed to be ravenmom1~
DeleteI'm beginning to see that ravenmom! Thanks for stopping by.
